Although geographically nearer to Italy, geologically Sicily was regarded until quite recently as belonging rather to Africa. This view was based on the prevalent belief that at some remote period Sicily formed part of the African continent. But geologists have now abandoned the hypothesis of a prehistoric isthmus between northern Africa and Sicily, which thus returns more closely than ever to its traditional association with Italy.

The triangular shape of the island has been known since the times of Homer, and its ancient names, Trinachria and Triquetra, not to mention the three-legged coat of arms, so like that of the Isle of Man, are allusions to this most conspicuous physical feature.

The coasts of Sicily, viewed from the sea, appear generally as a vast assemblage of rocky peaks, which often fall abruptly away in huge cliffs and bluffs. Here and there, as between Trapani and Mazzara and around the estuary of the Simeto, the hills recede some distance from the coast and plains open to the sea.

To a traveller sailing or flying down the east coast from Messina, the island presents the typical view of grand, precipitous moun­tains overlooking the sea, but if one is near enough, a rich belt of vegetation will be seen, consisting of lemon and orange groves at sea level, with vineyards on the hills above them, while higher still, on the steep sides of the mountains, olive-trees are grown on terraces supported by rubble walls. The coast continues thus as far as Catania, attaining the height of its luxuriance and mag­nificence between Taormina and Catania, where the grandeur of Etna dominates the scene.

Our last trip was in Oct, the water was still so nice and the temperatures were perfect. First order of business, I hurry up and unpack getting all of our gear put up so that I can head down to the water and just chill for a couple of hours, kinda like getting into a vacation frame of mind.  Ahhhhhhh

Port A 1st Chill

During our last trip I noticed there were quite a few fishermen surf fishing, something that is on my to-do list for my next trip.

My daughter had some friends who came down to night fish in the surf and after a very short time of having their poles in the water (my daughter swears she is the fish whisperer and the only reason they caught anything) they caught a 34″ bull red.

They had the coolest gear, rod holders and alarms on their poles letting you know if there was a fish nibbling or if one was hooked.  And then of course were the head lamps (which I got one in my stocking this year).    When you are fishing and get tired of standing etc, you need to have a really comfortable chair to kick back in.  After all, being at the beach and fishing is its own form of meditation.  Might as well be comfortable.  If you do not know how to fish there are many affordable guides that are willing to take on groups or just one or two that will teach you all you need to know.  These guys have the gear and everything, you just have to come with the excitement of learning how to fish.  There is nothing like catching your first fish.  I can still remember catching my first fish, a catfish, I think I was 7.  I was proud!!!  Of course that was the lake and not the beach, but it was still memorable.

There are many really good restaurants in Port A with all types of cuisine available.  One of my favorites is the Brewery.  Their burgers made the top 50 best in Texas Monthly Magazine.  We have been there several times and enjoy the food.  See photos  And of course the beer is awesome also.

The weather in Port A is really good for at least 9 months of the year.  Going in April, the First part of May, and October work best for me.  The rates are a little cheaper.  Although deals can be found everywhere.  If you sign up for some of the newsletters for some of the condos you can sometimes get a jump on the reservations when there is a discount offered.  I recently got a 20% off coupon for my favorite condo complex.  Wooo hooo. You bet your ass I booked it right away.

If you go in April, try to book the weekend when the SandFest is happening.

Yes, it is crowded but it is such a laid back crowd, no pushing, shoving or anything like that.  It is on the beach and nicely spread out.  Parking kinda sucks.  It usually isn’t a very far walk from where you are staying.  A nice stroll actually.  There are some absolutely stunning works of art by the sand sculptures.  The technique is really fascinating to watch.

The area in and around Port A and Rockport is known for it’s birding center.  While I have not made it there yet, I’ve heard from friends that it is really something to see.  I see interesting birds flying over the water while I’m sitting in my beach chair.  At least I think they are interesting, could just be the beer.

I watched this guy kite surfing for at least 30 minutes and was so impressed.  He zoomed back and forth, in and out jumping the waves at different times.  It was incredible.  I believe he offers lessons there on the Island.  I think it should definitely be on a bucket list somewhere.

This gas powered airborne kite wasn’t something I wanted to try at this point but it sure looked like a ton of fun.  There were two of them and they were have a great time and seemed to cover a great distance as I lost sight of them pretty quickly.

In late afternoon be sure and see if the bay cruise is operational.  It is super reasonable, you can bring your own cooler and listen to a wonderful  story about the different things in the bay area of Port A.   I think the cruise takes about 1  hour.  There are restrooms on board.  We usually bring a cooler with beverages and snacks.  It is so awesome to watch the dolphins swimming and playing in the wake or even running alongside the boat.  It is located at Fisherman’s Wharf and it is either the Scat Cat or Wharf Cat that offers the cruise.

Let’s Put A Few Things In Perspective:

Getting away from our everyday hectic lives for a even a weekend can rejuvenate us.
Obvious Benefits:
•    Disconnect from electricity of the office.
•    In natural light and not in unflattering fluorescent lighting.
•    Able to unplug for the most part. Away from our computers (leave it at home, your laptop doesn’t need to be at the beach playing in the sand).
•    Not confined to some sort of box whether it be a cubicle or your own office with a doors.
•    No noise pollution such as the constant ringing of office phones, the low hum of your computer, of course the copy machine, the sound of heels, boots etc of people walking around outside of your space, the hopefully muffled voices of coworkers.

We need to get out of the box and into nature and what better place that the beach and get surrounded by negative ions, which are naturally occurring wherever there is moving water.
Negative ions are invisible molecules that we breathe in whenever we are near water whether it be near the beach, right after a thunderstorm, or near a waterfall. Negative ions manufacture biochemical reactions that up our levels of serotonin, which in turn reduces the stress in our bodies and helps us to get in a better mood! Our better mood sometimes translates into childlike fun and adventure which we all desperately need at least every now and then.
Whether you decide to go to my beloved beach or one near your home, remember to have fun!

First tip of the day, try not to over-pack. It’s EASILY done. We all do it. Do you REALLY need more than 4 t-shirts? Do you REALLY need more than 2 pairs of pants (and in fact, do you need to bring pants at all if you’re heading over during summer?). So figure out when it is you’re going, what the weather is going to be like, and pack light accordingly.

You’ll want a pair of pants or shorts for long bus trips and train trips and these pants/shorts MUST be extremely comfortable. If they are not, you will regret your tight clothes wearing ways and will probably end up buying some more comfortable ones anyway.

Should you bring a money belt to Europe? Fledgling backpackers love the money belt, and you know what, I use it too. It is USEFUL in certain situations. I don’t wear mine all the time, I only wear it when I am going to sleep on a bus or train and won’t be able to keep an eye on my bags. That way if I do go to sleep I know that my passport and cash is securely on my body underneath my shirt. At a hostel though, I’ll just lock that stuff up in the lockers.

Here are a couple more items that I tend to always bring along with me when I go backpacking.

Anti-fungal cream. Yeah, I know it’s gross to think about, but weird skin thingies do happen on the road – so it’s always nice to be prepared.

A journal and pen to record all of my adventures, make note of funny anecdotes and to remember places and things that happened. Keeping a diary is always worth it!

A small torch. Yep, I don’t use my phone for light, why would you want to rely on something that has to be plugged into the wall all the time just to work!? Handy for early morning exits or late night entries into the hostel dormitory.

Decent water bottle. Try and get one that is BPA free and is going to last. It’s so much better than re-using the plastic ones over and over again!

Either way, if you do happen to actually forget something, you’ll be fine when backpacking in Europe. You can buy everything you want/need – so most importantly, pack light and have fun.

At the foot of the castle are arranged together sixty granite espigueros, used for storing maize. These granaries are found throughout the Minho and the usual placing of a cross on their roofs indicates the religious feeling that motivates their careful construc­tion. The sight of so many of the granaries together and their obvious resemblance to a graveyard invites some explanation as to their significance. The word espigueiro is derived from espigo meaning corn cob. They appear to be quite ancient but, in fact, the growing of corn was only introduced into the Minho in the seventeenth century. Its introduction transformed the small holdings of the area as it was discovered that from the maize a staple food, bread, could be made. Maize bread is called broa by the country people. This accounts for the importance of the granaries and also, as the bread was often used during Mass, for its religious significance. The harvesting of the maize and the de-leafing of the cobs is one of the great social occa­sions of the year in villages throughout the Minho.

The granaries are also known as canastros, and being raised from the ground serves the practical purpose of protection from flooding and rats. The canastros at Lindoso date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The maize bread should be tried in combina­tion with a glass of the local vinho verde. There is an example of a traditional oven used to bake bread in the castle of Lindoso.

Returning from Lindoso along the N203, after about 10km (6km) is the turning to the village of Soajo. This is a tiny village isolated among hills with stunning views over the nine Azores islands on the horizon. The highlight of a visit is again the collection of canastros sitting together on a rocky platform. The reason for their being placed together, as at Lindoso, is the traditional methods of collective farming practised as a matter of survival by the village community. Even today herds of sheep and goats are said to be held in common by the people of the village.

A source of income for the local people has also long been hunting. The men of Soajo were given privileges by the former kings of Portugal, the Bragancas, deposed at the beginning of the twentieth century, to hunt the wild bears, wolves and boars that once lived in the mountains. The people of these remote villages still have a great pride in their independence and self-reliance. The only accommoda­tion in Soajo is in rooms above the village café.
