(Museo Nacional de Escultura), Calle Cadenas de San Gregorio 1 (open daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays; closed on Mondays and holidays), in the old quarter, contains what is reputed to be one of the finest collections of religious, polychromed statuary in the world. The museum is housed in the elaborate Colegio de San Gregorio, built between 1488 and 1496, whose facade is profusely covered with detailed carvings.

Noteworthy churches, all in the old quarter, include the twelfth-century El Salvador with Flemish school paintings; San Pablo with its late Gothic facade; Santiago with its prized altarpiece by Alonso Berruguete, The Adoration of the Magi; and the thirteenth-century Santa Maria la Antigua with its lovely Romanesque tower.

Valladolid’s still unfinished Cathedral, in the middle of the old part of town, is not one of Spain’s most noteworthy, but it has a lovely sixteenth-century Renaissance altarpiece by Juan de Juni; and its choir stalls, similar to those at the El Escorial monastery, were carved from designs made by the famous Spanish architect Juan de Herrera. Original plans for the Cathedral were drawn up by Juan de Herrera at the end of the sixteenth century; but the bulk of construction did not take place until the early eighteenth.

Valladolid (population 317,346), 30 km north-east of Tordesillas, or 184 km north-west of Madrid, is both an industrial town and the centre of a farming area, and it is the capital of the province of the same name. Wheat is a major crop on the plains and grapes for wine are grown along the banks of the River Duero. Valladolid lies on a tributary of this river, called the Pisuerga. Some of Spain’s most beautiful castles are close by. Valladolid itself is reasonably clean and neat, and it occupies a prominent place in Spanish history – but it takes itself a lot more seriously than other Spanish towns. As a result it is Toullsville, except during fiestas and Holy Week.

It has an airport, at Villanubla, 14 km distant, but the only daily flights are to Barcelona, Vigo and, in summer, Palma de Mallorca. It is on the major rail line from Madrid to Santander.

The monumental part of the city lies on the right, or east, bank of the Duero. A good starting point for finding your way around is the triangular-shaped park near the Estacien del Norte Railway Station. The apex of the triangle, at the Plaza de Zorrilla, points north towards the old section of town, which begins right there, with its many short, narrow streets. The bus station is at Puente Colgante 2. The Tourist Office is at Plaza de Zorrilla 3.

The history of Valladolid before the time of the Moorish domination is obscure, but soon after its reconquest, it became the capital of Castile, and it remained so until Philip II decided to move the seat of government to Madrid. It was the capital once again briefly during the reign of Philip III, but his successor, Philip IV, moved back to Madrid.

Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic monarchs who finally drove the Moors out of Spain, were married here. Columbus died here and Cervantes was briefly imprisoned here. Their respective houses can be visited. Columbus’ house is a museum devoted to the theme of discovery; Cervantes’ is a library and literary museum.

1.  You should always be aware of what the privacy settings are for your photos on social networking or photo-sharing sites. Most of the time the default setting is on public and will stay that way unless we change it.  What this means is that anyone that is online can have access to your personal photos and even your personal information. Change your settings so that only people that you know are able to see your photos and comments etc.   Also, only tell those that you know and trust very well that you are on vacation. It would be best to post your trip photos after you are already back home as an extra safety precaution.

2.  It is not very practical for you to carry all of your sensitive documents around with you when you are on your trip. There is a chance that you can lose them or they might even be stolen while you are out having fun. Keep all important documents back at the hotel when you go out, but make sure to keep them locked in your hotel room  safe or if there isn’t one in your room, ask the front desk if they have hotel safes for guest to use.  Hotel rooms are not that hard to break into and with all of the people coming and going in the halls, no one really knows who is in which room.

3.  All of your digital devices should be given a different password so that you are the only one that has access to the information on them. If you use the same password then it is easy to hack into each of your other devices.  Cell phones and IPads and other similar tablet devices  are the two most important devices you should be protecting. It’s amazing how many people put their work and home addresses, phone numbers and other personal information in there. You do not want all of this information to get into the wrong hands, so keep these devices locked, if possible and definitely password protected.  Don’t use your pets name and your numerical portion of your address for a password and don’t use your or your partner’s birthday either.  This information is easily found online.

4.  When you visit tourist destinations, you are more than likely so excited by all of the new things that there are to take pictures of that you do not realize the dangers in not securing your cameras. Unfortunately, there are people/crooks that lurk around and are on the lookout for  tourists because of that specific fact. Try to keep your camera as secure as possible. Returning it to your bag as soon as you are done taking all of the photos of a particular scene, location etc, even if you know that you will be taking more photos soon.   I know this seems like a hassle but your camera is an easy target for thieves.
